A DIADEM OF DEAD STARS "kingdoms bathed in golden light" LP
vendetta records #121

credits

released September 7, 2016

"Greece's A Diadem of Dead Stars have been quite productive over their short life span with a demo, two ep's and a two albums with in two years of existence, sole member The Pilgrim is showing no signs of slowing up. The wonderfully titled 'Kingdoms Bathed in Golden Light' is his latest endeavour and personally for me his best work to date.

This is quite an epic beast of atmospheric black metal with five tracks clocking in at just over an hour of play time, two of them over twenty minutes long each! Thankfully unlike a lot of bands in the genre there is plenty of variety contained within to keep the listener focused with nothing overstaying its welcome. Too many great tracks have been ruined because they are so one dimensional and lack any real variation making it easy for one to tire rather quickly due to their repetative nature.

The music itself is excellent and draws influence from a few of the many genre's confined within the realms of black metal, with its core firmly built on the atmospheric scene. You will be graced with cascadian and ambient sounding pieces throughout as well as others. The music itself can change pace at the drop of a hat, fast and agressive, slow and atmospheric, soft and ambient, taking the listener through a number of ever changing moods and all done very effectively, changing just at the right time.

The production and sound is perfect for this style, not to clean but clear enough to let all the instruments shine through. The keyboard work is also worth noting, piano melodies come and go not the mention the choir like sections which give the music a bit more of a hauting feel to it. The album ends with the Burzum like 'Into Trancelike Groves', an ambient only track, again haunting in nature and a perfect closer to this excellent release entrancing you with its sombre synth work.

The Pilgrim has showed much potential on this album and has improved immensely in the short years of the bands existence. This is one those albums under the right mood can take the listener on a journey and one that will serve the band very well. If this quality keeps up the band hopefully someday will reach the heights of their namesake." ( metal archives )
